more on internet vigilanteism

November 18, 2009 – 6:27 PM

I recently was forwarded a post from the popular link sharing site, Reddit, concerning an episode of internet vigilanteism strikingly similar to the events described by Clay Shirky in the opening chapter of Here Comes Everybody, “It Takes a Village to Find a Phone”. If Shirky had written on this case the chapter might have been titled  ”It Takes a Village to Misidentify a Criminal”. The article is followed by an impassioned online discussion about the internet, its role in, and often obstruction of , law enforcement.

OS 10.5.8/Quartz Install Issue: Resolved!

October 22, 2009 – 8:14 AM

Apparently,  Apple released an Xcode Tools update (Xcode 3.1.4) in September along with the release of OS 10.5.8. This is the reason many of you have not had success installing the Developer Tools package provided with OS 10.5.

Bad news first; This version of Xcode is HUGE and requires 2 gigabytes of free hard drive space to install.

The good news is, that version is still available.  Follow the directions below to download and install it.  Another option is to go ahead and spring for the paid update, OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The latest version of Quartz Composer is included on the installation disk (Xcode Tools vers 3.2).

  • Click here to go to the Apple Developer Connection site.  You will be asked to Register or Log in.  Registering is simple and Free of charge.
  • Once you are registered, log in.
  • Click on Downloads
  • in the right hand column, click “Developer Tools”

  • Scroll down the page a bit and look for this:

  • Download the Disk Image.
  • Launch the XCode Tools Installer.

  • Install only “Developer Tools Essentials”.  We can see in the details window below that Quartz Composer is included in this package.  Deselect any other optional installs.

This should work! Good luck!
